Lucky’s Story –

The Beginning of Our Mission

Our Story

Lucky’s tale is the heart of why we exist. He was a 13-year-old, healthy Royal Bahamian Potcake who went to the vet for a swollen front leg. A visit like any other in a pet’s life, his leg was swollen, one would assume that antibiotics were the apparent answer until what we thought was a practicing attending Veterinary Doctor. Little did we know that the Dr was a resident who told us that Lucky shouldn’t have antibiotics due to antibiotic stewardship, amongst other misdiagnoses, we trusted the professionals with our beloved boy’s care.

Tragically, due to a series of avoidable mistakes during his treatment, Lucky never made it back home. Our grief was compounded by the discovery that there would be little accountability for what happened. There was no independent investigation, and we were left with more questions than answers. Lucky deserved better – every pet does. His story fueled our determination to push for oversight and transparency in veterinary care. We share Lucky’s story not to dwell on tragedy but to spark action. It’s a sobering reminder of the fragility of trust and the price we pay when the system fails. Lucky’s legacy lives on in every petition we circulate and every law we fight to change.

This is just one of the many stories we’ve heard. Sadly, we receive new reports nearly every week – different pets, different circumstances, but the same recurring theme of preventable loss and a lack of oversight. Each story reinforces the urgent need for reform and reminds us why The Lucky Foundation exists.

 Your Story Matters, Too. If you have experienced veterinary negligence or malpractice, we encourage you to share your story with us. By coming forward, you’re not only finding your voice but strengthening a collective call for change. Every testimony we gather paints a clearer picture for the public and for policymakers that this problem is widespread, not just a string of isolated incidents. We treat each story with the utmost respect and confidentiality (at your request). With your permission, we share these narratives to push for better laws, better training, and better practices in the veterinary field. {CREATE A FORM TO CAPTURE STORIES FROM READERS}

Together, we can turn our pain into power. Whether by sharing your experience, supporting our initiatives, or simply spreading the word, you become part of Lucky’s legacy and part of a growing movement to demand better for our animal companions. Our case studies and shared experiences show the world what’s at stake and what must change. With every voice that joins us, we move one step closer to ensuring that no other family has to ask, “Why did this happen to us?” – and that no other pet’s life is cut short due to preventable negligence.

Take Action: If these stories resonate with you, please consider taking the next step. Donate to help us expand our advocacy, Sign the Petition urging lawmakers to act, or Share Your Story to contribute to our growing record of why change is needed. Change is possible when we stand together. Lucky’s spirit – and the love we all have for our pets – guides us as we work to ensure every veterinarian, every clinic, and every lawmaker hears our united message: we demand better, safer care for our animal family members.

ABOUT US

We Love to Take Care of Your Little Friend

The Lucky Foundation was born from this heartbreak to demand change. We are turning our grief into action, fighting for a world where no pet suffers from preventable medical mistakes. Our mission is clear and urgent – to push for oversight in veterinary practices, advocate for stronger laws that protect our animal companions, and ensure veterinarians receive the education and support they need to prevent tragic errors. By sharing Lucky’s story, we hope to shine a light on a silent crisis in animal care and inspire a movement for safer, more compassionate veterinary medicine.

Volunteers – who want to team up with their dog to help people in need at hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and other facilities.

Professionals – health workers, educators and others who want to work with their dog to enhance a professional practice.

We are advised by experts in immunology, infectious disease, psychology, veterinary medicine, and Animal Assisted Intervention.

Every dog deserves love, safety, and a family to call their own.

Some dogs can help humans heal. Our mission is to teach them how.

Differentiation

What makes The Lucky Foundation different is the unwavering passion and unique perspective we bring to the fight for animal safety. We are pet owners first – people who have felt the profound love that a pet brings and the searing pain when that trust is betrayed. Our organization was founded in the aftermath of a personal tragedy, giving us an authentic drive that sets us apart from larger animal welfare groups. This cause isn’t abstract to us; it’s deeply personal. Every initiative we undertake is rooted in the question, “Would this have saved Lucky, and will it save others?”

Holistic, Systemic Approach:

Unlike general animal charities, The Lucky Foundation zeroes in on a specific, under-recognized issue – veterinary malpractice and negligence. We don’t just offer sympathy; we demand solutions. From the exam room to the courtroom, we address the full spectrum of change needed. Our strategy blends emotional storytelling with hard facts and research to persuade both hearts and minds. By working on oversight, laws, and education simultaneously, we ensure that our efforts lead to long-lasting, structural improvements, not just one-time wins.

Collaborative and Constructive

We are not here to villainize veterinarians – we’re here to uplift the profession by fixing the system that can fail pets and vets alike. This collaborative spirit differentiates us from more adversarial approaches. We engage with veterinary professionals who share our commitment to higher standards, creating an open dialogue about how to improve care and accountability. We’ve built relationships with vets, legal experts, and animal advocates to form a coalition that is both compassionate and credible. Media outlets and policymakers recognize us as a go-to resource for understanding the complexities of veterinary care reform because we balance heartfelt advocacy with professional expertise.

Community-Driven Movement

Perhaps our greatest differentiator is our community. What started as one family’s cry for Lucky has grown into a collective movement. Pet owners from all over are sharing their stories, volunteering, and campaigning alongside us. Each story and supporter adds urgency and strength to our cause. We amplify these voices to show that Lucky’s story is not an isolated incident but part of a widespread problem that can no longer be ignored. By uniting individual voices into a powerful chorus for change, The Lucky Foundation transforms grief into a driving force for reform. When you support us, you’re not just backing an organization – you’re joining a family of advocates determined to protect every pet like our own. In everything we do, we maintain the highest level of professionalism and integrity. Our heartfelt approach is always backed by facts, legal insight, and a genuine desire to work with all stakeholders to achieve safer outcomes. We know what’s at stake – our pets are family, and we will never stop fighting for them in a way that is both passionate and principled.
